Library Summer Reading Program
Library summer reading program Voyage to Book Island @ Your Library! for Ages 0-11 & 18 + and Make Waves @ the Library for Ages 12-17 will run June 1 – July 30, 2009.

Join the library for a teddy bear (or any other friends that want to come) picnic. Bring your meal and join us for games and stories.

Join the library teens are welcome to the library for a late night fun. Pizza and drinks will be provided.

Join the library in celebrating the end of Voyage to Book Island @ Your Library for ages 0-11! Meet at the RAF Lakenheath Movie theater to watch Wall-E.

Displays: The library observes each of the federally recognized monthly observances by placing relevant displays of material in the front of the library. In addition, the library staff also creates displays to show the local area and host nation culture and events.

Tours: We provide orientations and tours of the facility and collection for library patrons of all ages. Individual or group orientations/ tours must be requested in advance. Of particular note are the orientations that are provided to the University of Maryland Library Skills Class students, and Lakenheath High School, Middle School and Elementary School students. Database orientations are also provided to familiarize patrons with the online resources available.

Book Club in a Box: This program is for current book clubs and those aspiring to form one. Kits, that include 10 copies of a book along with materials to facilitate discussion, are available by request from the library. Stop in, call or click on the Book Club tab for more details and a full list of titles available.

Online Book Club: Users of this service receive small portions of a book in their email for one week. If this taster has sufficiently piqued the interest of the user, they can stop by the library and check out a copy to finish the book. To sign up for this service, just click on the "Online Book Clubs” tab.
Collection and Services : CHECKOUT Policy: All items can be checked out for a period of three weeks, with the exception of DVDs, which are limited to three-days. There is a limit of 3 DVDs per account.

Chief of Staff Reading List: The current and previous books on this list are maintained in sufficient quantities to meet the current demand by military patrons.

Rental Books: The library maintains a revolving selection of current and recent released bestsellers through a vendor rental/purchase program.

Books: The General Collection has a selection of over 35,000 Fiction, Nonfiction and Biographic items available for checkout to patrons of all ages. There are also special collection areas for children and teens with age specific material for these groups.

Audio Books: We have a large and constantly growing selection of fiction, nonfiction and biographies on cassette tape or CD formats.

Compact Discs CDs): There is a good selection of music in a wide variety of genres that are well received and used by library patrons.

Videos: (U.S./NTSC and U.K./PAL-I Format) The library has an extensive collection of videotapes for children and adult available (in both formats) for checkout.

Digital Video Discs (DVDs): This is the newest and most rapidly growing area of the library collection and has proven to be very popular with library patrons of all ages.

Foreign Language: The Base Library has a growing selection of foreign languages on cassette tape, CDs, and DVD for patrons to use in preparation for TDYs or personal trips to other countries. There is also a Rosetta Stone Language Lab with 10 languages available to support patron’s foreign language studies.

Magazines: currently subscribe to over 70 magazines, journals and periodicals.

Newspapers: The Base Library subscribes to 7 daily and weekly newspapers from our host nation and U.S. publishers.

Education: The library has assembled all of the CLEP, DANTES, GED, GMAT and GRE materials in a separate collection area. To provide a one-stop shop for library patrons working toward their Community College of the Air Force and off-duty education goals.

Services:

Copier Machine: A copy machine is available for patron use at a cost of .10 cents per page.

Study Rooms: The library maintains three quiet study rooms for individual or small group discussions for class preparation, and a language lab for Rosetta Stone programs.

Fax Machine: We have a commercial fax machine available for public use. International and incoming faxes are $0.50 per page. National (UK) faxes cost $0.25 per page.

Conference Room: There is a room available for groups up to 25 people to hold meetings or larger study groups. Advance booking is required.

Paperback Exchange Area: Free paperbacks are available for adults, teens and children in the library. The Library accepts donations.

Internet Access: The library has 26 terminals for patrons to access the World Wide Web for mission support, academic research, paper preparation, email, or shopping. To support patron requirements, there are two printers networked and available from all 26 computers to provide 5 printed pages at no cost to users. The library also provides a scanner, and free wireless connection for patron use. Access to online research databases is available to patrons via the USAFE libraries home page.

Children’s Computers: The library has two of these set up for kid’s use and they are loaded with several educational software packages for fun and educational games.

Home School Resource Room: We have made available a small room for Home School families to pool and share resources.

Community Support:

We maintain the current and back issues of The Force and 48 FW community weekly news magazines for reference.

Space is provided for informational flyers, pamphlets and posters from agencies on the base to be displayed and available for patron use.

Services Marketing and Publicity materials are displayed for patron use, such as the monthly At Ease, the annual Leisure Travel and Recreation Guide and the Community Guide.

Coupons are available in the Library in a box adjacent to the conference room. The commissary accepts coupons up to six months past the expiration date.
